So my Grandma is actually from Budapest and two things I miss the most since being vegan would be the family recipes for Goulash and Schnitzel. That made this trip a little harder seeing as the vegan options weren’t exactly to the same standard and the delicious meals I grew up on were surrounding me, the first time I almost missed it – but didn’t.
Most of our meals were planned as we were in a group of 15 so I can’t tell you how great the precious little vegan bistro was in the arty side of town BUT I can show you what all the traditional restaurants will give you if you beg them not to include cow tongue, cheek and liver.
Meal One: Zeller Bistro
Seasonal vegetables and a coconut curry sauce – they actually had a separate vegetarian menu which was very promising for the first day’s meal. No other place did though so don’t get your hopes up as I did. Also this was the only vegan option on the vegetarian menu so also don’t get your hopes up again.
Meal Two: Városliget Café & Restaurant 1895
A delicious hungarian vegetable paté is how they described it, basically thrown it all on some bread and – it was good. (This gets 10 hangover points)
Meal Three: Menza
Apparently this place is really hard to get a booking at, so we were pretty lucky as 15 of us. They made me a beetroot risotto and seasonal veg, it was really really good. They knew the word vegan which gives them +20 points and I felt like part of the dinner with a food some of the other guys also had. Woo.
Bonus meals
Hungarian vegetable soup: you have to try and find one somewhere, we walked for miles around the castle before stumbling upon this place and it was the most difficult hangover I’ve had. Well it wasn’t but it comes top 10.
Last day, quesadilla with no cheese. It looked amazing but as per with restaurant vegan food it wasn’t v substantial. Had to order extra fries.
